Q1. Could you please open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil level, and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil? Also if the car needs more oil where would you put it?

 

A.  point to the dipstick and tell the examiner that you would take out the dipstick, clean it with a rag, replace it, take it out again and read the level which should be between the minimum and maximum markings. Then point to the oil filler cap and tell the examiner that is where you would top up the oil.

 

Q2. Please open the bonnet and identify where the engine coolant level is and how you would check that it is at the correct level?

 

A. point to the engine coolant and tell the examiner that the coolant should be between the maximum and minimum markers on the front of the bottle.

 

Q3.  Could you show me where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level?

 

A.  point to the screen wash cap and tell the examiner the only way to check if there is screen wash in the reservoir is to operate it from inside the car.

 

Q4.  Please open the bonnet and show me where the brake fluid reservoir is and how you would check that the brake fluid is at the correct level?

 

A. point to the brake fluid reservoir and tell the examiner you would check the level against the maximum and minimum markers on the front of the bottle.

Q5. How would you check that the brake lights are working?

 

A.    ask someone to stand behind the car or drive up to a reflective surface and operate the brake pedal.

 

Q6. How would` you check the brakes are working before starting a journey?

 

A.    while the car is stationary operate the brake pedal, the brakes should not feel SPONGY or SLACK, also the brakes should be tested as you move off and should not pull to one side.

 

Q7. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures and how the tyre pressures should be checked?

 

A.    Information on tyre pressures is in the car manual and using a tyre pressure gauge check and adjust tyre pressure.  Remember also to check the spare tyre and to refit the valve caps afterwards.

 

Q8. How would you check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe for use on the roads?

 

A.    Using a tread depth gauge the minimum tread depth should be 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre.  also there should be no cuts or bulges on the tyre.

 

Q9. Show me/explain how you would check that the power steering is working?

 

A.    You would start the engine and put slight pressure on the wheel steering gently from side to side but not enough to actually turn the road wheels, and when doing this the steering should not feel HEAVY.

 

Q10. Show me how you would check that the dipped headlights, sidelights and tail lights are working?

 

A.    turn the ignition key until all the lights come on in the dashboard then turn the switch for the lights from auto to dipped and walk round the car, check that both the side and dipped lights are working at the front and that both bulbs for the tail lights are working..

 

Q11. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working?

 

A.    operate the hazard lights switch and walk round the car checking each indicator light.

 

Q12. Show me/explain how you would check that the horn is working?

 

A.    I would take the car somewhere off-road and press the horn.

 

Q13. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear?

 

A. make sure that when the handbrake is applied it secures itself  and wont go back down and also when it’s applied that it’s not at the end of its working travel.

 

Q14. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

A. The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. N.B. Some restraints might not be adjustable

 

Q15. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

A. Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen (turn ignition on if necessary.

 

Q16. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.

 

A. Set all relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction / source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration.

 

Q17. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.

 

A. Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.

 

Q18. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.

 

A. Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light

 

Q19. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light's and explain when you would use it/them. (No need to exit vehicle).

 

A. Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain that when visibility is reduced to 100m (328 feet) or less headlights must be used and you may also use the front or rear fog lights.  Also fog lights must be switched off when visibility improves.
